Based in Woking, Surrey, Billy Liberator (the stage persona of indie veteran Paul Huggett) is a prolific British singer-songwriter known for his blend of West Coast melodies, Beatles-esque hooks, and driving rock energy. Rooted deeply in the local music scene of South East England, his songwriting balances high-energy live presentation with evocative storytelling centred on themes of people, place, and time
A major catalyst in his creative journey has been a tight-knit collaboration with legendary drummer and producer Steve “Smiley” Barnard (known for his work with The Alarm, Archive, and Joe Strummer). Working together at Smiley’s Sunshine Corner Studios, the duo has shaped a signature, positive sonic landscape. This creative partnership paved the way for highly regarded physical and digital releases, including the breakout EP Your Heart Wears It Well, the politically resonant single Future Days Now, and his acclaimed full-length studio album, MidCentury.
Beyond his recorded material, Billy is celebrated for his vibrant presence on the UK independent gig circuit, where he has earned high-profile opportunities such as supporting Scottish rock icons Big Country, as well as The Alarm 2.0, Spear of Destiny, and Miles Hunt (The Wonder Stuff).
Whether performing standard radio sessions, supporting grassroots festivals, or raising awareness for rock ‘n’ roll cancer charities like the Love Hope Strength Foundation, he remains a steadfast advocate for live music. Offstage, the dynamic frontman takes pride in a grounded lifestyle, happily identifying as an avid amateur hiker and a dedicated family man.
